Koinryō: an interactive dummy for martial arts training

In this research through design M.Sc thesis the design and construction of an autonomous agent is described. The agent, constructed from natural materials, pneumatic muscles and electronics, is capable of participating in martial play in novel ways, occupying a role which lies between a passive instrument such as a boxing bag, and that of training partner. The research sheds light on how martial arts can contribute to design and vice-versa, advocating for the introduction of "rough-play" into designed artefacts, and further supports the notion of imperfection as a design resource.
